Spray, atomising, and cold-water evaporative humidifiers carry a legionella risk because they disperse water droplets into the airstream and can support bacterial growth if poorly maintained. Steam humidifiers produce sterile steam and carry far lower risk. Spray-type humidifiers must be included in the water safety scheme with appropriate treatment, cleaning, and disinfection.
Why do steam humidifier cylinders need replacing?
In electrode-boiler steam humidifiers, minerals from the water gradually deposit on the electrodes and in the disposable cylinder as water boils away, eventually reducing output and requiring cylinder replacement. The replacement interval depends on water hardness and runtime — harder water and heavier use mean more frequent cylinder changes.
