Editorial standards

The maintenance checklists, inspection forms, topic explainers and guides on this site are written and maintained by the PM Assist editorial team. This page explains how they are made, where their facts come from, what the dates on them mean, and how to tell us when something is wrong.

How the checklists are written

  • Each maintenance checklist is one entry in a single library of 133 asset types. It lists the routine tasks for that asset, grouped into visual, functional, cleaning, safety and record-keeping checks, with a suggested frequency for each.
  • The same library generates planned maintenance in the PM Assist product. When a task or frequency is corrected on a checklist, the schedule a customer gets for that asset changes with it — there is no second copy to fall out of step.
  • Checklists are a starting point, not a substitute for the manufacturer's O&M manual or a site-specific risk assessment. Each page says so, and where the manufacturer or the assessment sets a different interval, that interval governs.
  • Statutory duties are named only where the compliance register tracks them for that asset — the register holds 91 UK duties, each with the regulation, approved code of practice or British Standard it comes from.

Where the facts come from

Pages that make a regulatory claim end with a Sources list of the primary material behind it. We cite the source rather than a commentary on it, and prefer stable landing pages to deep links that move:

  • legislation.gov.uk for the regulations themselves — for example the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, LOLER 1998, the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
  • HSE for guidance and approved codes of practice, such as ACoP L8 and HSG274 for legionella control.
  • GOV.UK for government guidance, such as F-gas and air conditioning inspection requirements.
  • SFG20 (published by BESA), the industry maintenance specification, where a page refers to it, and BSRIA and CIBSE guidance where a page relies on it.

Every source link was checked to resolve when it was added, and where guidance and legislation differ, the page defers to the legislation.

What the dates mean

The Last reviewed date on a checklist, guide or topic is the date its content was last edited, taken from the site's version history. It does not move when only the design or the code around the page changes.

When a statement is found to be wrong — a penalty, an interval, a regulation number — it is corrected rather than left for the next review, and the page's date moves so search engines fetch the corrected version.

Report an error

If a task, frequency, regulation or figure on any page looks wrong, email support@pmassist.co.uk with the page address and what you believe it should say, with a source if you have one. Corrections are made to the page itself, and to the product's maintenance library where the checklist is affected.
