What is an automatic door maintenance checklist?
A automatic door maintenance checklist is a structured list of the 12 preventive maintenance tasks — covering visual, functional, cleaning, safety and record-keeping checks — that keep an automatic door running safely and reliably. It groups routine checks by frequency, from daily inspections to annual servicing, so FM teams and building engineers can plan and evidence preventive maintenance.

What is an automatic door?
An automatic door is a powered pedestrian doorset — sliding, swing, or revolving — comprising an operator, drive mechanism, activation sensors, safety sensors, and a control unit. In commercial buildings they are usually main entrances, which makes them both the highest-traffic doorset in the building and, frequently, part of the means of escape.
The safety case rests on sensors. Activation sensors open the door for an approaching user; safety sensors — presence detection in the door's path and at closing edges — prevent it striking or trapping someone. BS 7036 and BS EN 16005 set out the requirements for safe operation, including limits on the forces a door may exert. Sensors drift, get knocked, and fail, and a door with a failed safety sensor operates apparently normally right up until it closes on someone.
Where an automatic door sits on an escape route it must also fail safe, opening or breaking out under manual force so the doorway is usable when powered operation is unavailable. Verifying that break-out function still works is one of the checks most often skipped and most consequential.

Visual Checks
- Check door leaves, glazing, and any manifestation for damage
- Confirm warning signage and floor markings are present and legible

- Verify drive belt or chain tension and check for wear
- Test the mode selector and confirm each mode behaves as labelled
Cleaning & Housekeeping
- Inspect and clean tracks, guides, rollers, and thresholds
Safety Checks
- Test safety and presence sensors, confirming the door stops or reopens as designed
- Measure closing and opening forces against the limits in the applicable standard
- Check break-out or emergency opening operates with the specified manual force
- Confirm operation on power failure matches the escape strategy for that door
- Check interface with fire alarm and access control where fitted
Record Keeping
- Record test results, forces measured, and any adjustments in the log
