What is a pressure vessel maintenance checklist?

A pressure vessel maintenance checklist is a structured list of the 12 preventive maintenance tasks — covering visual, functional, cleaning, safety and record-keeping checks — that keep a pressure vessel running safely and reliably. It groups routine checks by frequency, from daily inspections to annual servicing, so FM teams and building engineers can plan and evidence preventive maintenance.

What is a pressure vessel?

A pressure vessel is any container holding a fluid under pressure — air receivers, steam drums, calorifier shells, buffer and expansion vessels, and autoclaves. In a commercial building the most common are compressed air receivers serving controls or workshops, and vessels associated with steam and pressurised hot water systems.

Where a vessel contains a relevant fluid, it falls under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. That brings a specific and often-missed obligation: the system must have a written scheme of examination, drawn up or certified by a competent person, specifying which parts are examined, how, and at what maximum interval. Routine maintenance does not discharge that duty and cannot substitute for it.

The practical distinction worth holding onto is between maintenance and examination. Maintenance keeps the vessel and its protective devices in good order — draining, inspecting, checking relief devices. Examination is a formal assessment under the written scheme by a competent person, producing a report. Both are needed, and a site that has one without the other has a gap.

  • Check pipework connections and valves for leaks and secure fixing

Functional Checks

Safety Checks

Entry into a vessel is confined space work and requires a permit and dedicated procedures
Steam and hot water systems remain a burn hazard well after isolation — allow to cool
