Why is my PRV not holding pressure?
The most common cause is debris on the valve seat preventing it from sealing properly. Clean the upstream strainer and, if the problem persists, inspect the valve internals. Worn seats, damaged diaphragms, or weakened springs can also cause pressure creep or fluctuation.
How do I know what pressure to set a PRV to?
The downstream pressure should be set according to the system design. For domestic cold water, 3–4 bar is typical at the floor level. For connections to equipment, check the maximum inlet pressure rating. If in doubt, refer to the design drawings or commissioning records.
Do PRVs need a strainer?
Yes — a strainer upstream of the PRV is essential. Debris from the mains or pipework will damage the valve seat and cause it to fail. Some PRVs have an integral strainer, but this still needs regular cleaning. A separate line strainer upstream is better practice for ease of maintenance.
